Welcome to ITI

Gilbert E. Carmichael

ITI Senior Chairman
Board of Directors

President, Missouth Properties LP
Meridian, Mississippi

When I was President Bush's Federal Railroad Administrator, I gained global exposure to the leaders and trends in transportation. I saw, firsthand, the dramatic changes that are underway. This experience convinced me that a whole new science of transportation was evolving—one built around the fast-growing concept of intermodal operations.

A new generation of specialists requires training in this intermodal science, and I tried to find a university that was up to the challenge. The University of Denver's Intermodal Transportation Institute demonstrated the research excellence, academic experience, and vision to lead the way.

I am proud to chair a board made up of many of the industry leaders who are building this global intermodal system. It is our job to ensure that ITI remains at the cutting edge of intermodal education, research, and service.

Intermodal transportation is an exciting field. Partnerships among the modes are enhancing safety, reliability, service, and productivity. Intermodal is the new global standard for transportation systems for the 21st century.

We established ITI with a straightforward goal—to become recognized internationally as the leading academic institution on intermodal transportation systems and to serve as a "think and do" tank in partnership with the public, academia, government, and industry.

We intend to be the best at what we do, and we are already "thinking and doing." ITI held the first North American Intermodal Transportation Summit with the secretaries of transportation from the US, Canada, and Mexico. ITI acquired the 60,000-volume historical library of the former Interstate Commerce Commission. And, ITI is a national center for intermodal systems planning and assessment in partnership with Mississippi State University under the 1998 TEA-21 legislation.

We believe that transportation needs professionals trained in intermodal systems, and our innovative MS degree in intermodal transportation systems began Fall 1999. This rigorous, 12-month, interdisciplinary program provides passenger and freight concentrations and involves industry and ITI board members.

We invite you to share our vision and join with us to shape the future.
