Background

Stephen D. Van Beek, PhD, serves as the executive director of policy and strategy for LeighFisher in Reston VA. Prior to this, he was president and CEO of ENO Transportation Foundation. Van Beek was formerly a director at Jacobs Consultancy, a large engineering consulting company. Prior to joining Jacobs Consultancy, he was the senior vice president of policy and strategic development for Airports Council International—North America. Van Beek was primarily responsible for establishing
ACI-NA's policy program and strategic plan and managing public affairs. Prior to joining ACI-NA in March 2001, he was associate deputy secretary of the US Department of Transportation between November 1999 and January 2001. During his service he chaired a federal advisory committee on airline delays and cancellations that produced recommendations for modifying airline and government data on airline service. He also worked to promote the improved clearance of goods and people between the US and Canada. From February 1998 to November 1999, was deputy administrator of the department's research and special programs administration. He has also served as associate professor of political science at San Jose State University in California and has been a research associate with Norman Y. Mineta International Institute of Surface Transportation Policy Studies. Prior to his tenure at San Jose State, he taught at Washington and Lee University. He received his PhD  and masters  in government and foreign affairs from the University of Virginia. He received his BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
