Data Backup Procedures

Directions for Windows XP Users:

Before you begin, open up Windows Explorer

Go to Tools menu -> Folder Options

Click on the View tab

Check “Show hidden files and folders” option

Uncheck “Hide extensions for known file types” option

Click the “Apply to All Folders” button

Click the “OK” button

Common backup media include external USB/Firewire hard drives, memory/flash drives, CD-R/DVD-R and mapped network drives (example: LOKI).

Most common folders/files to backup include:

  • My Documents

(C:\Documents and Settings\%user profile name%\My Documents)

  • Favorites

(C:\Documents and Settings\%user profile name%\Favorites)

  • Desktop

(C:\Documents and Settings\%user profile name%\Desktop)

Any .pst files (Personal Folders) used in Microsoft Outlook. An advanced search including hidden files using *.pst as the defined search will yield all results. If using POP3 in Outlook, please backup your .pst file. Exchange users & IMAP users do not have a .pst file unless they have created an additional Personal Folder in Outlook for local mail storage. To check whether or not you use POP3, IMAP, or Exchange for email click on Tools-> Account Settings in Outlook and verify account type.

Mozilla Firefox 2.0 users may also want to backup their Bookmarks found here:

C:\Documents and Settings\%user profile name%\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\%user profile name%\

Go to Organize menu -> Folder and Search Options

Click on the View tab

Check “Show hidden files and folders” option

Uncheck “Hide extensions for known file types” option

Click the “Apply to All Folders” button

Click the “OK” button
