UTS Computer Imaging & Deployment Services

UTS provides computer imaging services to Faculty/Staff for specific models of Dell computers. An image is a clone of a hard drive, pre-configured with software that can be distributed to one or several other computers. This is a DU standardized image configuration that is installed in replacement of the factory installed image that Dell ships with their machines. It will contain Windows XP Pro SP2, Office 2003, Symantec Anti-Virus, DU VPN client, and a few other miscellaneous applications. If a faculty or staff member requests, UTS can image a newly purchased machine at the Service Center located in the lobby at 2100 South High Street. UTS will assist in deploying these machines to the user depending on availability and resources.

PLEASE NOTE: There will be blackout dates for computer deployments begining Monday August 25th - Monday September 15th of 2008. We apologize for this inconvenience. If needing deployments, please coordinate purchases before or after these dates.

General Policies

New Computer Quotes & Imaging

  • New computer quotes can be made through Jason Bach by submitting a Computer Procurement Request. Typically new quotes will be based off of UTS’s recommended current Dell Optiplex or Latitude model.  An email will be sent back containing the quote which can be reviewed and forwarded to Dave Wiley in Purchasing.
  • Please have all Dell computers shipped to our Service Center for imaging and configuration. Non-Dell computers need not be shipped to the Service Center as UTS does not support images for non-Dell machines.
  • If purchasing large quantities (4+) of machines for imaging, please only have 1 computer sent to the Service Center and have the remaining sent to the deployment destination.
  • If shipping to the Service Center, please coordinate with Jason Bach via email on deployment specifics such as who the machine is going to, delivery time and place, and account usernames and passwords.
  • Please verify and differentiate account usernames and passwords for the following via email with Jason Bach:
    • webmail (username or 87 number and your passcode)
    • CAIR domain authentication (access to Loki)

New Computer Deployments

  • Please ensure that all data is backed up to a network share (ex. Loki) or external drive before UTS deploys a new machine to replace an old one. If data is not backed up prior to deployment, UTS will reschedule for another date. If you have questions about backing up your data, please contact Jason Bach. Please visit the Data Backup webpage for detailed instructions. Most common folders/files to backup include:
    • My Documents
    • Favorites
    • Desktop
    • Any .pst files (Personal Folders) used in Microsoft Outlook. An advanced search including hidden files using *.pst as the defined search will yield all results. If using POP3 in Outlook, please backup your .pst file. Exchange users do not have a .pst file unless they have created an additional Personal Folder in Outlook for local mail storage.
  • UTS is not responsible for moving old computers, re-arranging furniture, or other office equipment. Please coordinate with Facilities Management & Planning for these services. If old computers need to be recycled, please visit the Electronic Equipment & Disposal page.
  • Please ensure that the new computer to be deployed has access to an active network jack and that an ethernet cable with proper length is available for use. UTS does not provide free ethernet cables. Please submit a work request through the UTS Helpdesk if a network jack needs to be activated.
