UTS Policies: Modems

Who may use DU modems?

The University of Denver's modem pool may be used by active students, active employees, and retired employees as defined in the Network Access Policy. A current DU ID and PIN are required. For Windows dial-up networking, type your DU ID in the User name box and your passcode in the Password box.

Current DU IDs, also know as Banner IDs, are 9-digit numbers beginning with the digits 87. Effective July 1, 2002, Social Security Numbers and older DU IDs will no longer work.

DU IDs and passcodes are managed by the Office of the Registrar (for students) and Human Resourses (for employees). Changes in passcodes made by these offices will not be available for accessing modems until the following day.

Telephone Numbers

Modems are divided into two pools:

  • 303-376-0500 -- Accesses a pool of 176 modems with a 120-minute time limit.

  • 303-376-0676 -- Accesses a pool of 16 modems with a 15-minute time limit.

Time Limits

Our dial-up modem lines are frequently in high demand. Time limits are enforced to assure that everyone has an opportunity to access them. Two classes of service are available:

  • 120-minute time limit (telephone: 303-376-0500) -- Time limit varies between 2 and 6 hours depending on modem availability. Modem use is checked every 5 minutes. If the limit is more than 120 minutes and 4 or fewer modems are available, the limit is lowered by 15 minutes. If more than 4 modems are available and the limit is less than 360 minutes, the limit is increased by 15 minutes. After the limit has been adjusted, any connections that have been established for longer than the limit are terminated.

  • 15-minute time limit (telephone: 303-376-0676) -- Modem use is checked every 5 minutes. Any connections that have been established for more than 15 minutes are terminated.

Technical Information

Modem pools have been upgraded to V.92, the new dial-up modem specification from the ITU (International Telecommunications Union). V.92 modem connections offer the following performance improvements:

  1. Modem-on-hold (MOH) allows for a dial-up connection to pause while an incoming call is answered or while a call is iniated by the user. Requires the user to have call waiting service enabled.
  2. V.44 compression protocol delivers data rates between 10 and 120 percent faster than those achieved by the existing V.42bis compression protocol.
  3. Quicker connect times. Preliminary tests show that, on average, connect times are 30 percent to 40 percent faster with V.92 than with V.90.
  4. PCM upstream boosts the data rates from the user to the ISP thereby reducing upload times for large files and e-mail attachments.
  5. NetWaiting (Similar to MOH) bundled with the Conexant V.92 modem chipset and driver allows the user to determine the status of an incoming call. This feature also requires the user to have call waiting service enabled.

DU modems support the following protocols:

Speed and Modulation:

  • V.92
  • V.90 (56 kbps; however, because of FCC regulations, maximum speed is 53 kbps.)
  • V.34 (33.6 and 28.8 kbps)
  • V.32 Terbo (19.2 kbps)
  • V.32bis (14.4 and 12 kbps; 9600, 7200 and 4800 bps)
  • V.32 (9600 and 4800 bps)
  • V.22bis (2400 bps)
  • V.22 (1200 bps)
  • Bell 212A (1200 bps)

Error Correction:

  • V.42
  • MNP 2-4

Data Compression:

  • V.44
  • V.42bis
  • MNP 5
