Frequently Asked Questions

Videoconferencing - Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: Am I able to access the Internet during a video conference?

A: Yes, you can. There are network ports located on top of the table which may be used to access the Internet. Furthermore, any webpage you bring up can be displayed to all videoconferencing participants.

  • Q: If I have problems or questions during my conference, who do I contact for help?

A: The Multimedia Services staff will be available to assist you. They are located right nextdoor to the Videoconferencing room.

  • Q: How do I go about making a videoconferencing reservation?

A: You can make a reservation to use the Multimedia Services Video Conferencing room by calling the Multimedia Services staff at 303.871.3595.

  • Q: What does IP mean? ISDN?

A: IP stands for "Internet Protocol." It is a system that was created to deliver data across networks. This is relavent to videoconferencing because IP can be used for placing a call.

ISDN stands for "Integrated Services Digital Network," and is an international standard for the digital transmission of voice, data, and signals over normal telephone lines. Like IP, this can also be used for placing video conference calls.

  • Q: Do you offer ISDN, IP, or both types of video conference calls? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

A: We offer both ISDN- and IP-based videoconference calls. IP-based calls offer the advantage of being more reliable (a single connection versus three for ISDN) and easier to set up. There is also no "per-minute" fee with an IP-based call. However, because of the higher level of service that comes with IP-based calls, they do have a higher overall usage fee.

  • Q: How much does videoconferencing cost?

A: The initial setup fee for both IP- and ISDN-based videoconference calls connecting to a single outside point is $200.00. The setup fee for calls connecting to more than one remote site is $235.00. Additional fees are figured in afterwards.

ISDN-based calls are subject to a per-minute fee governed by Qwest's long-distance charges.

  • Q: Is it possible to connect more than one remote site during a call?

A: Yes, this is called a multi-point call. Using our videoconferencing bridge, we are able to connect up to fifteen remote sites in a single conference.

  • Q: What is a bridge?

A: A bridge is a device that is able to connect more than one remote site to a videoconference. Multimedia Services is capable of connecting up to fifteen remote sites in a single conference with our bridge.

  • Q: Why must a reservation be a minimum of one hour?

A: A one hour minimum helps keep scheduling simple. What this means for you is much fewer possibilities that a scheduling conflict or error will occur.

  • Q: What are the technicial specifications of your system?

A: The core of the system is a Polycom VSX 7000e. In addition, there are two 40" LCD TVs mounted on the wall, a DVD/VCR combo player, network ports, and VGA ports for connecting a laptop into the system.
