Web Publishing/Development Policies For DU Departments and Units
The University of Denver, at its sole discretion, will determine the acceptable nature and the form of websites on its servers. The following policies apply uniformly to all who conduct the business of the University, regardless of where web servers reside or who administers the servers delivering University content. Additionally, all DU departments' and units' Web pages/sites, regardless of the publish date, are subject to these policies.
Web sites/pages that violate the following policies are subject to corrective action, including, but not limited to, immediate removal from University owned servers. University Technology Services (UTS) and the Division of Communications & Marketing (MarComm) are responsible for corrective action, as outlined below, when violations are evident. However, staff in those offices cannot be responsible for identifying all violations of this policy. To report policy violations please email email@example.com.
Violations of Web publishing/development requirements:
- Any advertising or commercial activity unrelated to University business;
- Any violation of applicable University of Denver Intellectual Property Policy;
- Any violation of University of Denver Privacy Policies;
- Any violation of the University of Denver Computer and Network Acceptable Use Policy;
- Pages that misuse the University of Denver logos, seals, or trademarks;
- Primary departmental or unit pages that do not display an official logo of the University of Denver;
- Any content judged defamatory or obscene;
- Any content that includes a call to incite riot or that infringes on the rights of others;
- Any content that conflicts with the best interests, and stated goals, of the University;
- Pages that do not meet Level A for accessibility. Level AA for accessibility is recommended. Although conformance to accessibility levels is not governed by any regulative authority, the University of Denver strives to meet and exceed Level AA conformance. Please read Accessibility Compliance Objective for the University of Denver for information on DU's accessibility efforts and guidelines;
- Methods of collecting, storing or disseminating information that risk the security of University networks or the security of users' personal data (Example: Requesting a credit card number over an unsecured connection, or storing it in an unsecured database);
- Coding that would render the Web page an irritant to the user, such as:
a. Pages that disable standard browser functions, such as the "back" button;
b. Pages with significant scripting errors;
c. Pages that require excessive load times;
- Significantly outdated content (obviously more than six months since content was valid);
- Coding that would interfere with the appropriate search results of other DU departments and units (i.e. using general keywords that should be reserved for other departments, such as "admission" for an undergraduate program requirements page);
- Erroneous or misleading information;
- A significant percentage of broken links on a page.
Corrective action when Web pages and/or sites violate requirements above:
- Immediate removal of the offending Web pages and sites, and/or removal of all centrally maintained links to such sites, as well as removal of ownership and permissions to access the University's Content Management System (CMS) or web servers, may be initiated by the Vice Chancellor for Technology and/or the Vice Chancellor of Communication & Marketing.
- For minor policy violations, departments and units may be given the opportunity to take corrective action themselves. In such cases, written notice to remedy the problem(s) will be sent to the website owner of record. If the notice is returned undeliverable for any reason, the notice will be forwarded to the department or unit head. A reasonable amount of time, dependent upon the number and severity of the problems, will be stipulated for a satisfactory remedy. If remedy is not made by the stipulated deadline, a second notice may be sent at any time. This notice will include a date by which corrective action will be taken, and it will detail the specific actions required. If no action is taken by the department or unit, UTS and MarComm shall exercise the right to take corrective action to render an effective remedy. Corrective actions that UTS and/or MarComm may take include, but are not limited to, removing links to the site on top-level navigation pages, changing ownership and permissions to make the offending site inaccessible, deleting the offending site, fixing the site's problems, and/or redirecting web requests to another site.
- Site owners or department heads may request a review of the actions required, or taken, by UTS and/or MarComm within 30 days of the first notice. At such time, an appropriate review group will be appointed by the VC for Technology and the VC of Marketing & Communication. The group's decision will be final and binding.
