Common Connection Issues with Dreamweaver
- Incorrect site definition settings: the most common issue is incorrect settings in the site definition:
- Do not use the FTP/RDS option when creating a new site (check-in/check-out options may not be available).
- Check to make sure departmental/organization settings are being used rather than mysite.du.edu settings.
- Are you using your du username (8 character or less alpha-numeric) rather than your DUID (87xxxxxxx numeric)? Are you using your webCentral/myWeb passcode?
- Disable the "Enable Contribute Compatibility" option (located in the "Contribute" category in the Site Definition settings), even if the site has editors using Contribute to maintain content. Check to see that the site does not have any Contribute "admins."
- The check-in/ out option has caused issues for some users: if the user is the only content editor for a site, it's an option to disable check-in/out if the user reports they are having issues getting files checked in.
- Inability to delete files: the ability for users to delete their files from DW is inconsistent. Files initially imported during the web server migration in August of 2007, have occasionally resist deletionion from FTP clients. Also files that are still being referenced from other files in your site can't be deleted. So when deleting files, please consider the big picture. The file to be deleted cannot be linked to by any other page, and you must also be aware when using both remote and local views as well as check in/out can cause confusion. To do this check out the files to be delted, then delete the files on the remote view, then delte them in the local view. This should reduce confusion, and putting files back on the server after they were deleted.
- BAK files created after deleting referenced files: occasionally deleted files return in .bak file incarnations, complete with links from other pages in your site. Delete .bak files and turn off rollbacks in Contribute to eliminate the creation of new .bak files. It can be difficult to completely eliminate .bak files -- contact webteam@du.edu if you need assistance.
