2005 Annual
Theme – Global Energy: Empowering the Future
In the 2005 World Affairs Challenge, participants investigated that which is the very center of everything that happens in the world: energy. Author Vaclav Smil says, “Energy
is the only universal currency: It must be transformed to get anything
done.” With the world population dramatically increasing in both the industrial and developing sectors, world energy demand will also increase. The subsequent need to supply this demand with affordable, reliable, efficient and nonpolluting technologies is of major global importance. Not only did World Affairs Challenge participants examine the impending environmental concerns of our present dependence on fossil fuels, but they also focused on the international, socio-political issues of energy conversion, distribution, and use. One of our greatest challenges today is that of giving everyone on the planet access to safe, clean, and especially sustainable energy supplies. Ultimately, Challenge participants became aware of the world’s current problems surrounding energy, discovering viable solutions to empower the future and ensure a promising tomorrow.
