Writing ConsultationsAppointments and Walk-InsAny DU student may make an appointment for a consultation by calling us at 303.871.7456 or by going to myWeb, clicking on Student & Financial Aid, and then selecting the Writing and Research Center Menu. We will also see students on a walk-in basis, if a consultant is available. Consultations begin on the hour and typically last about 45 minutes. If you arrive more than 10 minutes late for your appointment, you may lose your appointment slot. Writing Center "Happy Hour"In the Fall, Winter and Spring quarters, the Writing Center offers a “Happy Hour” Mondays through Thursdays from 4 - 6 p.m. for students who have brief questions about their writing projects. Happy Hour is the perfect time for a second set of eyes on a thesis statement, a quick citation question, or an opinion about that transition that’s been bothering you. No appointment needed, but please be sure your questions or concerns can be addressed within no more than ten minutes. The Writing Center “Happy Hour” operates in addition to regularly-scheduled full-length appointments. Get Help on Any Writing ProjectYou may bring any writing project to the Writing Center, whether it’s academic, personal, or professional. We work with writers in every subject area, from engineering to English and business to biology. Some of the projects we can help you with include the following:
Visit Us At Any Point in the ProcessWe will work with you at any point in the writing process: brainstorming, developing a thesis, organizing, revising, using sources, and editing. Our help is meant to foster strong critical thinking and decision-making. Thus, you maintain responsibility for your own work throughout the consultation; we do not edit or revise your work for you, but we will help you revise or edit it yourself. What To BringPlease bring any writing or notes you have completed so far on the project. If you're working on a paper for a class, please also bring the assignment sheet. In addition to notes and assignment sheets, please bring a printed copy of your work. It is generally easier for us to respond to work in print rather than on a laptop. If you are working on a multi-media project, we will be happy to work in whatever medium your project can be most easily displayed and discussed. Writing Center PoliciesWriters can meet with a Writing Center consultant once per day per writing project. Writers can have a total of three meetings with a Writing Center consultant for each writing project that is less than fifteen pages in length. Consultations will not be conducted less than two hours before an assignment is due. ConfidentialityYour visit to the Writing Center remains confidential unless you give us permission to send a note to your instructor. Our notes merely describe what you and the consultant worked on during the consultation; we do not evaluate you or your work in any way. Tell Us How We DidPlease take our exit survey, after your consultation. Your opinion matters! Workshops for Student GroupsStudent groups may request a free writing workshop using the online request form through email or by calling 303.871.7456. We are happy to visit your group anywhere on campus to deliver a lively, interactive presentation about any of the following:
If none of these topics hits the mark for your group, talk to us about a customizing a workshop for you. Online ResourcesFor a list of online resources or easy to read handouts for different styles, please go to our resources page. Online Resources
