Writing Center

Now Hiring for Fall 2017

The University Writing Center is seeking writing consultants and admins to begin in fall 2017. Positions are available to DU graduate students and undergraduates.

WRITING CONSULTANT

Writing Consultants' primary responsibility is to work with DU writers in individual and group consultations, helping them to develop new strategies and habits and improve as writers. Consultants work with writers of all levels and on all kinds of writing projects, acting as informed readers who respond to writers' texts in a non-evaluative and rhetorical fashion. 

Consultants participate in regular and ongoing training in writing center theory and practice, concentrated in fall quarter and continuing over the academic year. 

Essential functions:

  • Work with DU writers in individual and group consultations. 
  • Keep consistent descriptive records of all consultations. 
  • Participate in Writing Center outreach, including class visits, resource tables, and other events. 
  • Audit or enroll in a 2-credit graduate course on writing center theory and practice, scheduled for Wednesdays 4-6pm in fall quarter only.
  • After the first quarter, additional opportunities include helping to develop and facilitate writing workshops, conducting research on writing practices at DU and locally, developing new resources and programming, and more.

Preferred skills and abilities:

Consultants, who must be DU graduate students or undergraduates (sophomores, juniors, or seniors) in the fall of 2017, must be experienced writers who are committed to exploring their own writing processes in their work with other writers and to learning about writing in varied disciplines and contexts. They should be open and friendly people who are willing to work with students from across DU's campus and are committed to becoming engaged members of a collaborative and active work environment.

Job logistics:

Consultants work 6-10 hours per week in fall, winter, and spring quarters. Graduate student consultants start at $14/hour, undergraduates at $11/hour.

Writing Center Admin

Writing Center Admins' primary responsibility is to ensure that students, staff, and faculty who come to the Writing Center have a smooth and productive experience. 

Essential functions:

  • Greeting writers and ushering them through the check-in process. 
  • Managing consultants' schedules and writers' appointments. 
  • Identifying and solving scheduling problems. 
  • Maintaining consultation records. 
  • Helping to keep the Writing Center space well organized and operations running smoothly. 
  • Additional duties may include designing and distributing publicity materials, conducting client surveys, collating data, and participating in outreach efforts on campus. 
  • Attending occasional training workshops. 

Preferred skills and abilities:

Consultants must be DU students at any level, including first-years and graduate students, in the fall of 2017. They should have the ability to solve problems and manage multiple tasks, and they should have excellent organizational skills. In addition, they should be people who are willing to work with students from across DU's campus and are committed to becoming engaged members of a collaborative and active work environment.


Job logistics:

Consultants work 8-10 hours per week in fall, winter, and spring quarters. Graduate student consultants start at $12/hour, undergraduates at $10.50/hour.
