Dear Friends,

Sometimes it feels like the University is changing too much too quickly. Other times, it seems like hardly anything is happening at all. The reality is that all across DU, we’re seeing changes big and small—some fast, some a little slower—that, together, represent the living, breathing embodiment of DU IMPACT 2025.

This document was never a step-by-step implementation plan. Rather, it is a strategic vision that reflects the work and passions of members of the DU community and guides our collective work. 

Realizing DU IMPACT 2025 is an ongoing, collective process, and we are learning together from our successes and shortcomings. From the Daniels College of Business and Colorado Women’s College to the Division of Athletics and Recreation, many units are in the process of implementing new plans, while others are finalizing plans or starting new ones—all aligned with DU IMPACT 2025.

Some of Our Largest, University-Wide Work Is Underway

Denver Advantage

The Denver Advantage begins with three student-centered facilities that bring to life our vision of holistic education for students and an inclusive One DU approach:

  • A Community Commons that will encourage more interactions between students, faculty and staff through robust, new dining options and space more conducive to collaboration and mingling.
  • A first-year residence hall will support programs specifically designed to help students launch their academic journeys and to feel they belong in our DU community.
  • A Career Achievement Center to support students throughout their time at DU and beyond for lifelong career succcess.
  • Phase two of the Denver Advantage is a campus master planning process to identify our academic space and other space needs and to build a vibrant DU village, working with our neighborhoods and with communities across Denver.

DU Grand Challenges

DU Grand Challenges, which combines the core tenets of our strategic plan, will harness the intellectual capital of the University to work in concert with our neighbors on issues of Thriving Communities: Living, Working and Participating. On Oct. 2, we issued the Grand Challenge Scholars Grants RFP and the Grand Challenge Classes RFP. If you have questions, please email du.grandchallenges@du.edu.

Moving Forward for Change

Below, we briefly summarize the work of the implementation clusters and assess our progress. The clusters are charged with consulting broadly in the community and proposing specific projects and pilots to advance DU IMPACT 2025. You will see and hear references to such progress on the DU IMPACT 2025 website, on the DU news site, on posters around campus, in The Bridge and The Pulse newsletters and more.

But the realization of DU IMPACT 2025 is not confined to these groups and clusters. Professors, students and staff members are infusing the spirit of this plan into their daily work in and out of the classroom. Such work doesn’t always fit neatly into specific boxes or updates—but there are stories of impact all across the DU community, including among our alumni and friends.

Our Impact

Read about some of the stories of impact—from a DU partnership with UC-Berkeley in the Solar Decathalon and the quarter-century-old Bridge Project to the new Social Enterprise Fellowship launched in partnership with Quarterly Forum. If you have other stories you think we and others on campus should know about that align with DU IMPACT 2025, please send them to us.

No implementation team is meant to be representative of the entire campus, which is why teams continue to consult with members of our community. In the 2016-2017 academic year, implementation teams hosted over 90 events including town hall meetings, faculty workshops, informal lunches, targeted career events for students and alumni and more. For instance, an emerging knowledge bridge focused on mental health, called DU CARES, hosted seven workshops with 56 faculty members whose research interests intersect with mental health. Other groups were more insular or worked last year to identify overall objectives. We will continue to push these groups to consult more broadly. Meanwhile, we invite you to contact cluster leaders and our project manager, Alexandra Lustig, to share ideas or ask questions.

We look forward to the continued hard work and creativity of our DU community as we spend the 2017-2018 academic year working together toward our shared vision. We will provide updates and share news throughout the year, and the DU IMPACT 2025 website features an Our Progress section where you can always learn more. We hope you will find ways to engage, formally and informally, in this important work.

Together, We Are Shaping the Future of DU

Collaboration for the Public Good

The cohort of nine Community-Engaged Student Fellows hosted five events that engaged a total of 36 faculty and staff members, 14 students and seven community organizations. Together, they worked in the following issue areas: Metropolitan Denver Nature Alliance (mDNA), Criminal Justice, Health Equity, Youth Voice, Education Access & Equity, Transportation, Social Entrepreneurship, Writing & the Public Good and Urban Renewal .

Designing and Developing Knowledge

We have changed the language of the Professional Research Opportunity Fund (PROF) and proposed to increase the funds available for a multi-disciplinary team from $30,000 to $45,000 for the next application cycle. The proposal is currently under review by the Faculty Senate.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity

We have created the Diversity Dashboard on the new website for Diversity and Inclusion. The Dashboard gives us a snapshot of student composition, campus climate, student engagement benchmarks and student outcomes.

DU and Engagement with Denver and the Region

The University selected Ayers Saint Gross (ASG) to embark on the development of the Campus Master Plan. To get involved and keep up to date with all of the activities, please visit the master plan webpage. You can also have direct input on the development of the campus master plan by attending the open forums.

Engaging Alumni and Friends

We created a new Director of Campus Engagement role to grow career and employer engagement pathways with faculty. Over the summer, we sent out a “Faculty Career Champions” survey to students to identify faculty that have supported student internship, career and continuing education goals. We received over 350 submissions and, as a result, we organized a Faculty Breakfast where over 80 faculty joined us for a career discussion on September 13. After receiving positive feedback from the faculty involved, our team is working on next steps, including reaching out to faculty members individually.

Enhancing and Expanding the Learning Environment

We have established a General Education Review and Inquiry Committee, rooted doubly in DU IMPACT 2025 and in the desirability to critically evaluate general education periodically. They will conduct an inquiry into the philosophy, goals, delivery and outcomes of the DU common curriculum, doing so in relation to other possibilities or opportunities. The process may yield anything from a reaffirmation of the existing program as it is or modifications of the program to significant changes. We have also started the second year of our One Book One DU program.

Enrollment and Financial Support for Undergraduate and Graduate Students

For undergraduates, we are working on a bold, new fundraising proposal, tentatively labeled the Denver Promise, that will help close the unmet need gap and provide greater access to higher education to hundreds of diverse, talented Denver-area students.

One DU

Outreach to undergraduate and graduate students was achieved through campus-wide tabling, attending student organization meetings and sending out an online survey to gather student input on the following topics: What DU traditions are students aware of? What traditions would students like to see on campus?

Faculty and staff input was gathered electronically via an online survey, a Staff Advisory Council meeting and the faculty senate listserv. Over 250 people shared their input during the data collection period.

Student Navigation

Building upon the strengths of the current partnership between Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and Career & Professional Development, the academic advising working group will engage the campus community as we explore strategies to best advise undergraduate students. The primary goal of this group will be to provide a framework to evolve our current advising model into an integrative approach to student advising for undergraduates.

Sustainable DU

The University of Denver Board of Trustees has endorsed a resolution encouraging new actions and backing continued efforts to embrace sustainability and address climate change on campus. The resolution reaffirms DU’s commitment and builds upon key principles under its sustainability objective in the DU IMPACT 2025 plan.

  •  Military Appreciate Week - Nov 10, 2017

    Dear friends,

     In honor of Military Appreciation Week (Nov. 6-11), I want to take a moment to acknowledge and thank the active-duty and veteran students, faculty, staff and alumni in the DU community whose sacrifice and service afford us the freedom to fulfill the mission of the University and to pursue happiness in and out of our studies and work. 

    Please take time this week—and throughout the year—to thank members of the military, veterans and their family members for their service. Take time, too, to encourage our active-duty and veteran students, who contribute in important ways to the DU community and the learning of all students.

    As an intellectual community, we are supposed to listen, learn, argue and explore others’ ideas, opinions and experiences. This is the essence of diversity and inclusion. Years ago, as a professor at Emory University, I learned first-hand the distinct perspectives that veterans can bring to a classroom—and how much everyone benefits from those perspectives and experiences.

    Many of you have read about or participated in the week’s programming, including the upcoming Veterans Day reception and hockey game this Saturday, Nov. 11, where the community will express our pride and gratitude to the veterans in our community. (Ticket sales for this event are now closed.) But let us ensure that our appreciation extends well beyond this week.

  • Statement on possible ending of DACA program – September 5, 2017

    Dear Friends,

     This morning, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that President Donald Trump ordered the end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and that Congress should replace the policy with new legislation before it fully expires on March 5, 2018.

     This is deeply distressing news for the promising young people who have spent the majority of their lives in this country—and who are receiving an education or working in order to continue contributing to our great nation. My heart goes out to the young people and their families who will be so deeply impacted in many ways. And I regret, sadly, the significant loss of the many contributions these talented individuals make to our community and in our country.

  • DU to initiate design and construction of new facilities to support DU IMPACT 2025 – May 1, 2017

    For many years the University of Denver has faced significant needs in student housing, community facilities and adequate career services space. Thanks to all who participated in and helped shape DU IMPACT 2025, those needs have been transformed into opportunities to serve our students, expand One DU and improve our reputation as a student-centered research university. We are pleased to report that on Friday, April 21, the Board of Trustees approved initiating the design and construction of the new facilities described below and using a bond offering to fund most of the cost of these buildings.     As an outgrowth of DU IMPACT 2025, we are beginning the process of developing a campus master plan—a blueprint that will guide the evolution of the physical and built environment on and around our campus to support the aspirations of our strategic plan.   • Divestment update – Jan. 24, 2017

    The University of Denver’s Board of Trustees has been giving considerable attention to ways our University can best pursue more sustainable practices and address the threats of global climate change, which we believe is a very real threat that must be treated with urgency and creativity.

    The Task Force on Fossil Fuel Divestment presented its findings, conclusions and recommendations to the January Board meeting. After full consideration and discussion, the Board approved a set of principles on climate change, divestment and sustainability based on the recommendations of the task force. The final report of the task force—titled Ends and Means: Considering Climate Change, Divestment and Sustainability at the University of Denver—presents those findings, conclusions and recommendations.   • Message from the provost: DU IMPACT 2025 status report – Oct. 10, 2016

    As the chancellor mentioned in her Sept. 12 welcome message, we are in the early stages of implementing our strategic plan, DU IMPACT 2025. Implementation is a process that must be both iterative and consultative—drawing on the collective energy and wisdom of the campus community. Throughout the coming year, we will provide updates on our progress in a number of ways. The chancellor’s website will provide a status report, and over time, this will come to include metrics to monitor outcomes and overall success. Read more

  • Racial tensions – Oct. 6, 2016

    A university is a place for learning—for a free exchange of ideas. DU is a place where students, faculty and staff from all backgrounds come together around a common mission. Our aspiration is nothing short of a robust, engaged community where conflicting ideas are discussed and considered with open minds and genuine intentions. In the last few weeks, we have witnessed an escalation of messaging on the “free speech wall” outside Driscoll Student Center that directly speaks to the racial tensions in our nation. Read more

  • State of the University – Oct. 5, 2016

    Chancellor Rebecca Chopp’s message to the DU community during this year’s State of the University address was simple: Through ethical leadership we all can build a community where people thrive. Chopp addressed over 700 faculty and staff inside Hamilton Gymnasium on Wednesday, Oct 5. “The University of Denver is only as strong as its faculty and staff,” she said. “It is your contributions–in scholarship, creative work, teaching and mentoring, in administrative and student support, food service, accounting, maintenance and coaching–that make us a university.” Video and news story recap.     Too often, I find myself writing in the wake of tragedy—from natural disasters, to mass shootings and bombings, to racial or other crises erupting across our nation—attempting to find ways that our community can come together and make sense of national and global news. Read more

  • Coming together in solidarity following Orlando gay nightclub shooting – June 17, 2016

    The University of Denver mourns the lives lost and forever changed by the massacre at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, this past weekend during the club's Latin Night. We are united in solidarity with the victims and their families and friends, the citizens of Orlando, the members of the colleges and universities many of these young victims attended, and with an America that is grappling with grief and outrage at this horrific act of violence against the LGBT community and attack against our democracy.   • New vice chancellor for Communications & Marketing – June 14, 2016
    I am pleased to announce that Renell Wynn will serve as the University’s next vice chancellor for communications and marketing, effective Aug. 15. Renell is currently vice president for communications and marketing at George Mason University, where she serves as principal advisor to the president on matters related to communications strategies and marketing initiatives.   • DU IMPACT 2025: Update on progress – May 23, 2016

    Last month, we shared a list of the small teams who were tasked with thinking through the implementation process for each of the initiatives of our DU IMPACT 2025 strategic plan. This week, that group will gather to bring those ideas together and discuss what will be necessary to realize DU IMPACT 2025, taking into account the opportunities as well as the potential obstacles ahead. In the fall and beyond, we are committed to providing regular updates and maintaining a transparent process as implementation moves forward and as the community is engaged in the process.   • Engaging our history and creating a more inclusive DU – May 4, 2016

    You may recall that in April of 2015, we announced the creation of the Task Force on Native American Inclusivity, an idea that grew out of substantial conversations on campus regarding the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre and, more broadly, the atrocities that this nation has perpetrated against Native peoples and the continuing struggle of Native peoples and cultures.   • Implementation teams formed for DU IMPACT 2025 – April 11, 2016

    In January the Board of Trustees approved DU IMPACT 2025 as the University’s strategic plan. Today we are pleased to update you on the next phase of our strategic planning process—developing implementation steps for each of the 19 strategic initiatives that make up DU IMPACT 2025. Recently, small teams composed of faculty and staff from each school and many administrative units began meeting to design implementation steps for each of the 19 initiatives. Read more

  • Response to tuition increase concerns – March 23, 2016

    Earlier this month, as we do each year at this time, we shared the University’s 2016–2017 tuition rates with students and families. Many students and families have expressed concern about DU’s 4.9 percent increase in tuition, as well as the increase of $540 in room-and-board charges. We write to provide more transparency into why we had to increase the tuition and charges for 2016-2017. Read more
