The Lamont Vocal Jazz Messengers Receive Downbeat Award

The 2015-2016 Lamont Vocal Jazz Messengers were awarded the Downbeat Outstanding Performance Award for 2016. The group won with their performance of "Down Under" by Freddie Hubbard, with the vocal arrangement and lyrics by coach Donna Wickham. This innovative and dynamic group writes and arranges all of their own music, often looking to classic instrumental jazz for inspiration. In the 2015-2016 school year, they performed a set of music by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, a Brazilian jazz set, and a set of jazz arrangements of David Bowie songs.
