Christopher Thompson began his musical studies at age six in Denver. He started performing and entering statewide competitions by the age of eight. He went on to study with Dr. Keith Wallingford at the University of Colorado-Boulder while he was still in high school. His dream was to attend a music conservatory, so he auditioned for Oberlin Conservatory and was awarded a scholarship to study there.

He earned a bachelor of music in performance at Oberlin, where he studied with Joseph Schwartz. While there, he won numerous awards including the concerto competition and performed Chopin's First Piano Concerto with the Oberlin Conservatory Orchestra. He was awarded third prize in the Kosciuzsko Foundation National Chopin Competition held in New York during his junior year. He attended the Aspen Music School for two summers on scholarship as a student of John Perry.

He went on to earn a master of music in performance from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he studied with Michael Chertock and Frank Weinstock. After graduate school, he moved to Chicago to work as a collaborative pianist.

During his time in Chicago from 2000-2006 and 2008-2010, he performed with numerous singers and instrumentalists at Northwestern University, DePaul University, Chicago College of Performing Arts and Harper College. He participated in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra musician's residency program, Grant Park Music Festival community outreach program and Lyric Opera of Chicago OperaKids program. He has performed with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Grant Park Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Chicago Opera Theater, Chicago Chamber Musicians, San Francisco Symphony and the Colorado Symphony.

He has also performed at the Grand Teton Music Festival (Wyoming), the Aspen Music Festival, Weill Recital Hall (New York), the Linton Chamber Music Series (Cincinnati), Dame Myra Hess Series (Chicago) and at Weill Recital Hall in NYC.

In 2006, Mr. Thompson was a fellowship student at the Music Academy of the West, where he collaborated with vocalists and received coachings by Marilyn Horne and Warren Jones. In 2007, he worked as the coach/accompanist for Opera Colorado Young Artist Ensemble, El Paso Opera, El Paso Choral Society, and Chicago Opera Theater. He was a faculty member of the National High School Music Institute at Northwestern University from 2008-2010.

Relocating back to his home state of Colorado in 2011, Mr. Thompson has since been a busy collaborative pianist. He held an interim staff collaborative pianist position at the University of Colorado-Boulder and has been on the music faculty at Metropolitan State University of Denver since 2012. He joined the Lamont Summer Academy faculty in 2015.
