Create a high-quality application.

  1. Get to know our department. Look at our faculty profiles, choose from our five areas of interest, review our four degree completion options, and examine our course descriptions to get a sense of how your studies will progress and which professors you might like to take courses with.
  2. Academic letters of recommendation are the most useful. Professors who can comment on your research and writing skills give us the best information, so at least two of the three should come from your former professors.
  3. Submit a writing sample that demonstrates your writing and research abilities. A paper from a previous religious studies class or religious studies topic is ideal. We look for fluid writing, the ability to analyze texts and works of material culture (artworks, e.g.), and sophisticated research skills.
  4. Use your personal statement to explain the origins of your interest in religion and its relationship to your career goals. Tell us why you chose our program, which of our areas of specialization best fit your interest, and what you hope to accomplish with your degree.
