Janice Benning Lacek  has been designing professionally across the US and internationally for theatre, opera, dance, and the occasional film  since 1987. Regional theatre highlights include the La Jolla Playhouse, where she designed the west coast premiere of Jose Rivera's Marisol, A.C.T. in San Francisco, Syracuse Stage, the San Diego Rep, the American University of Cairo, Egypt, and over 26 productions of the work of William Shakespeare with the Colorado, Utah, and Oregon Shakespeare Festivals. Her designs for CSF's Richard II were included by invitation in the US entry at the 1999 Prague Quadrennial.

The last 12 years have found her in Memphis, Tennessee with her husband David and daughter Grace. Audiences in the Mid-South have seen her costume work with Opera Memphis – she served as resident costume designer for the inaugural Midtown Opera Festival in 2013 - with Theatre Memphis, and many productions with the Tennessee Shakespeare Company as both costume designer and makeup designer.

Janice holds an MFA in Costume Design from the University of California - San Diego at La Jolla.  She began her teaching career at Kenyon College, in Gambier, Ohio and joined the faculty of the University of Memphis in 2007 with teaching specialties in theatre design, fashion history, costume design, rendering and costume technologies. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2013 and also served as Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Theatre & Dance as well as resident costume designer.

Not a stranger to the Front Range, Janice is a former resident designer (and founding company member) of Denver's award-winning Curious Theatre Company, and also taught costume and theatre at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Janice is a member of SETC, USITT and United Scenic Artists, Local 829.
