This course, presented by Patty Powell, J.D., former Director of Academic Achievement Program/Assistant Professor of Practice of Law, provides an overview of the topic of micro-inequities, a term that refers to small verbal slights or gestures directed toward people of difference (women, minorities, the disabled, GLBT, etc.), which are often unconscious and well-intentioned, but which can make individuals on the receiving end feel marginalized and isolated in an employment or educational setting. The tendency to commit micro-iniquities stems from stereotypes we harbor and assumptions we all make about those perceived to be the “other.” These unconscious assumptions are developed over time and they become deeply embedded—often in direct opposition to our explicit beliefs.
