Dr. Wendy Larson, Professor Emerita at the University of Oregon, will give a lecture on Chinese film director Zhang Yimou (1951-) and his films: "From "To Live" to "Hero": Zhang Yimou and the Politics of Culture in Contemporary China". Zhang Yimou's prolific oeuvre to date, Including multiple-award-winning titles, not only artistically reflects the many intriguing changes in Chinese traditional and modern ideas and practices under globalization, but also demonstrates the various stages of the aesthetic development of China's New Cinema in the post-Maoist Era. In conjunction with this event, the History Department Film Club will be screening "Hero" on Feb. 21, from 6:30-8:00 in SH 453.
