Legal Language Understanding with Dr. Shivakumar Vaithyanathan.

March 26

11:00am - 3:00pm

Engineering & Computer Science, Room 510, Event Space

In this talk Dr. Shivakumar Vaithyanathan will introduce Legal Language Understanding: the problem of building AI software to understand Legal Documents, with a focus on Business Contracts. This introduction will start with the definition of what it means to understand Contracts and the challenges in obtaining meaningful labeled data to learn and evaluate models. Vaithyanathan will then describe, in some detail, a class of Linguistics Models to try and capture the linguistic structures that determine the semantics of Contracts. The talk will also show the performance of Deep Learning Models on the same Contracts data. Vaithyanathan will share initial observations from our exploration on trying to understand what Deep Learning Models learn vis-a-vis Linguistics Models, for the task of Legal Language Understanding. This is a step towards gaining more transparency into the workings of the Deep Learning Models. Time permitting, we will briefly describe our Data Science Process that continuously adapts these models based on new, incoming content.

Watson Compare & Comply has released a Cloud service using the models described here.
