Commencement

Information for Students

For full details about spring Commencement 2016, see the student Commencement instructions.

As you prepare to graduate, use this checklist to make your transition from student to alumnus/alumna as seamless as possible.

Graduation Checklist

  1. Apply to graduate

If you completed your degree in autumn 2015 or winter 2016 quarter, or if you're a candidate to complete it in spring 2016, you are eligible to participate in DU's spring 2016 Commencement ceremony.

Graduate students: Apply no later than two quarters before the one in which you intend to graduate.

Undergraduate students: Apply three quarters before the one in which you intend to graduate.

You can apply for graduation online. Learn more about applying to graduate.

  2. Complete an exit interview with your loan provider.

If you accepted a Federal Direct or Stafford loan while attending DU, you must complete exit counseling online at StudentLoans.gov.

If you borrowed a federal Perkins Loan at DU, you must schedule an exit interview with the Bursar's Office, at 303-871-4901.

Direct Loan exit counseling is separate from Perkins Loan exit counseling. Completing one exist interview doesn't satisfy the requirement of the other.

  3. Attend your final classes, and take final exams.

Keep attending class, and take final exams to stay on track to graduate.

  4. Attend the Grad Fair.

Pick up your cap and gown and celebrate your achievement at the Grad Fair. You can also buy Commencement merchandise at the Grad Fair or at the DU Bookstore.

  5. Tell us where you're going.

The U.S. Department of Education requires us to gather information about the post-graduation plans of all DU graduates.

Spring 2016 graduates: You will receive an employment survey to complete at the Grad Fair. You can also complete the survey online.

Individual responses will be kept private.

  6. Arrive for the Commencement ceremony.

Graduate students: Please arrive at Hamilton Gymnasium—inside the Ritchie Center—in your cap and gown by 3 p.m. on Friday, June 3.

Undergraduate students: Please arrive at Hamilton Gymnasium in your cap and gown by 8:30 a.m on Saturday, June 4. Look for the sign bearing the name of your degree and first letter of your last name, and join the line formed beneath it.

Enter through the west doors (across from the Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium).

For more details, see the student Commencement instructions.

  7. Take photos in your cap and gown.

We will ask you to return your cap and gown immediately following Commencement, so please plan to take any photographs in your academic regalia before the ceremony.
