Past Event: C+V Community Talks: In Person, Online & In-Between: Navigating School Environments During COVID
As we jump into the fall, the level of uncertainty and change seems to grow every day. One of the biggest areas of change is being back in school environments during COVID — we recognize that DU community members, including faculty, staff, and students, are sending their own children back to school or tackling online education or both. We also have parents of DU students sending their children off to college, knowing things can change in the blink of an eye. School and change can and should be rewarding and exciting, but we know it’s stressful, and we know at times it’s confusing and unpredictable.
With this in mind, our C+V webinar is changing it up on 9/17. Special guest, Stephen Ginsberg, Licensed Clinical Psychologist and DU alum, will answer questions live from a parent panel, including Jennifer Karas, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Derigan Silver, Associate Professor, Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies. Questions will focus on navigating school environments during COVID, managing stress and uncertainty for parents and students both in school and online during a pandemic, how to cope and stay mentally healthy through these difficult and unique times, and more.

Dr. Stephen Ginsberg
Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Ginsberg Psychology

Dr. Stephen Ginsberg is a licensed clinical psychologist in Denver. He graduated summa cum laude with a BA in Psychology and Child Development from Tufts University and holds a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver. Dr. Ginsberg has provided therapy and assessment services in a wide variety of settings, such as residential, day treatment, outpatient, and college counseling centers. He has run a residential treatment program for Denver's at-risk youth, provided supervision to numerous therapists and professionals throughout his career and has been in private practice since 2013. Dr. Ginsberg was also an adjunct professor at the University of Denver doctoral psychology program. He was a college athlete and you can often find him behind the lens of his camera.
Jennifer Karas, PhD
Vice Provost for Academic Affairs

Dr. Karas joined the University of Denver as a lecturer in sociology in 1995, and was appointed to the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences dean's office in 2001, first as an assistant dean and then later promoted to associate dean. She joined the Office of the Provost in 2006 as an assistant provost, was promoted to associate provost in 2011, and most recently to Vice Provost for Academic Programs
In her position in the provost's office, Dr. Karas oversees many high impact curricular and co-curricular programs that have the potential to reach all undergraduate students across the campus. Additionally, Dr. Karas oversees the Undergraduate Common Curriculum and serves as the University liaison to this region's accrediting body, the Higher Learning Commission.
Dr. Karas earned her PhD in Sociology from Cornell University in 1999. She is a scholar of the sociology of immigration and ethnic group socioeconomic inequality. She is the author of Bridges and Barriers: Earning and Occupational Attainment Among Immigrants. She has most recently taught the course "Self as Leader" with the Pioneer Leadership Program. Her areas of academic interest include: Inequality and Social Change; Immigration; Racial and Ethnic Relations; Lifecourse and Transition to Adulthood; Gender and Family.
Derigan Silver, PhD

Derigan Silver is an associate professor in the Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies, an adjunct faculty member in the Sturm College of Law at the University of Denver, and the Faculty Director of the Center for Innovation in the Liberal and Creative Arts (CILCA). He has published in peer review journals and law reviews on government secrecy and national security law, originalism, defamation, social architecture theory, access to the judiciary, copyright law, commercial speech, and student expression. His work has been cited by legal scholars and judges. He is the co-author of the popular media law textbook, Mass Media Law, with Dr. Clay Calvert and Dr. Dan V. Kozlowski. Silver received his doctoral degree in mass communication in 2009 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Media and Journalism. Silver is a member of Kappa Tau Alpha, the national honors society for journalism, and a former Chair of the Law and Policy Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).
