Student Language Requirements
Consult the bulletin and your department for the most detailed and up-to-date degree requirements.
Undergraduate Language Requirements
The undergraduate common curriculum language requirement, also known as FOLA, is described as "Proficiency Plus," with the "proficiency" being First Year of a language and the "plus" being a university experience of studying a language. One year of language study at DU satisfies both elements simultaneously. Testing out of First Year requires one more quarter of the language to satisfy both elements of the requirements (in this case, the "plus" part). See the undergraduate page for more information on language requirements, placement tests and advising.
Graduate Language Requirements
Some University of Denver graduate programs require language proficiency for admission. Others require language proficiency as a degree requirement. Please check our Graduate Language Requirements page for more information on how to fulfill those requirements.
Student Support
Free, drop-in tutoring is offered by our language coaches during the fall, winter, and spring quarters in the Language Center on the main floor of the Anderson Academic Commons. Check our schedule for the hours when tutoring and conversation is offered in each language.
Job Opportunities
We hire work study and non-work study undergraduate and graduate students as peer language coaches in the spring for the following year. Please check back at our Job Opportunities page for more information.
