An Gorta Mor: The Great Hunger in Irish Memory

It was the most devastating period in Irish history, An Gorta Mor, Ireland’s great hunger, when nearly 3 million people died or abandoned Ireland between 1845-1852. In this course, Political Science Professor James Walsh examines the causes, including England’s imperial policies, England’s response, survival strategies, the immigrant experience on “coffin ships” to North America, the reception in North American cities to the Irish, and how North America organized for political and economic power.
