Book Talk on They Stole Him Out of Jail with Dr. Gravely

May 21

4:00pm - 5:30pm

In They Stole Him Out of Jail: Willie Earle, South Carolina’s Last Lynching Victim, Will Gravely (Professor Emeritus, Religious Studies) analyzes the flawed investigation and prosecution of Willie Earle, an African American man arrested for the murder of a taxi driver. Earle was abducted from his jail cell by a mob and beaten, stabbed, and shot to death.

More than 70 years later, the crisis in criminal justice—especially as it pertains to African Americans—remains a national challenge. This book is a compelling reminder not only of past traumas but of how far South Carolina and the country has yet to go.

WHEN: Tuesday, May 21, 4:00 p.m. reception, 4:30 p.m. lecture
