Featured Speaker Ann Merchant - The NAS Goes to Hollywood: Communicating Science Through Narrative Film & TV

The National Academy of Sciences launched The Science & Entertainment Exchange, a program designed to bring more (and better) science and engineering to movies/TV shows. The goal was that this would inform and inspire viewers on a variety of STEMM topics. This presentation will focus on the demonstrable influence that fictional stories and characters have on on audiences to change perceptions and even alter behavior and the impact that The Exchange has wielded over more than a decade in Hollywood.


Ann Merchant is the Deputy Executive Director of Communications at the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine in Washington, DC where she leads the institution’s portfolio of creative engagement activities, focusing on innovative outreach programs that contribute to an increased public understanding of science. Merchant has a special interest in promoting STEM through non-traditional channels was instrumental in launching and overseeing The Science & Entertainment Exchange.
