Next Steps for Borrowers

University of Denver Financial Aid

Now that you know your loan options and have estimated your bill, it's time to complete the requirements to secure your funding. Taking these steps now means you won't have to worry about finances when you arrive on campus in the fall.

Accept or decline your awards.
In order to receive any type of aid—including scholarships and loans—it must be accepted. To view and accept (or decline) your aid:

  1. Log into PioneerWeb.
  2. Go to the Law Student tab and click on the "View and Accept Award Offer" link in the Financial Aid Awards box.
  3. Select the 2017-2018 Aid Year from the drop-down menu.
  4. Go to the Terms and Conditions tab and read through the terms of accepting financial aid at the University of Denver. Then, click on the "Accept" button at the bottom of the page.
  5. Go to the Accept Award Offer tab. Next to each type of aid, select "Accept" or "Decline" in the drop-down menu. You can also accept a smaller portion of a loan by entering the total you wish to borrow for the year in "Accept Partial Amount" box.
  6. Click "Submit Decision."

Any federal student loan you accept will automatically be split evenly between fall and spring semester. Be sure to keep that in mind if you only accept a partial amount of a loan, as that partial amount will be split evenly as well.

Important Note: Because Direct Unsubsidized loans have better terms than Graduate PLUS loans (a lower interest rate and a smaller origination fee), we highly recommend that you accept the full $20,500 of your Unsubsidized loan before accepting a Grad PLUS loan.

Complete loan requirements.
Did you accept at least one loan in PioneerWeb? If so, there are additional steps you need to take to receive that funding.

For a Direct Unsubsidized loan:

  1. Log into https://StudentLoans.gov using your FSA ID.
  2. Complete both Entrance Counseling and the Master Promissory Note (MPN). Links to these items will be on your homepage once you login.

For a Direct Graduate PLUS loan:

  1. Log into https://StudentLoans.gov.
  2. Complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN). Remember that this loan is not guaranteed financing; you must pass a credit check to receive a Graduate PLUS loan. You will be notified by the U.S. Department of Education if you have been denied because of adverse credit.

Submit a budget adjustment form (but only if you need to).
There are some cases where we can increase a student's cost of attendance, which will allow him or her to borrow additional loan funding. If you have expenses that are not already included in your cost of attendance, you may want to consider submitting a budget adjustment form. This will increase the total amount of loan funding you can borrow for the academic year.

Sign up for a payment plan, if you wish.
If you will be paying a portion of your bill out of pocket, you may want to sign up for a payment plan. These plans have an application fee of $30, and split your bill each semester into four separate installments. Learn more through the Bursar's Office website.

Accept or waive health insurance.
Most students are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Program. If you are covered by another health insurance plan, you may waive participation in this program. To either accept or waive DU's health insurance:

  1. Log into PioneerWeb.
  2. Go to the Law Student tab.
  3. Click on the "Accept/Waive Health Insurance" link in the Advising and Registration tools box.
