Last Day of Fall Quarter

The last day of fall quarter is Tuesday, November 22nd. This is also the last day any type of federal aid—including federal student loans—can be certified for the fall term. If any adjustments need to be made to your student's financial aid for fall quarter, contact us as soon as possible!

Winter Quarter Disbursement

The winter quarter tuition bill is due on December 24th. On that date, your student's financial aid for winter quarter will disburse to his or her student account and will pay toward current charges—as long as all financial aid requirements are satisfied.

In order to receive financial aid, your student must:

  1. be registered for classes (learn about enrollment requirements),
  2. have accepted all financial aid through PioneerWeb, and
  3. have no outstanding requirements.

Winter Quarter Refunds

Expecting a refund? If the amount of financial aid that disburses is more than the total of your student's charges, a refund will be generated by the Bursar's Office on Tuesday, December 27th. Students who have direct deposit, can expect to see their refund in their bank account on December 28th.

Remember: DU Health insurance is only charged in the fall and spring quarters. So if you are expecting a refund for winter quarter, it may be higher than the refund your student received for fall quarter.

We frequently have students ask, "Can I get my refund sooner?" The short answer: no. We are prohibited by federal regulations to disburse financial aid funds any sooner than 10 days before the start of the quarter. Since winter quarter begins on January 3rd, we can't disburse funds any sooner than December 24th.

University Closed for Winter Break

As a reminder, the University of Denver is closed from Monday, December 26th through Monday, January 2nd. Since our office is included in the closure, we highly encourage you and your student to make sure all financial aid requirements for winter quarter are satisfied before the break. Doing this will help avoid late fees, and will ensure refunds are generated in a timely manner.

Changes to the 2017-2018 FAFSA

The U.S. Department of Education made a couple of changes to the 2017-2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). First, the 2017-2018 FAFSA became available on October 1st, three months earlier than in years past. Second, this application (as well as the CSS PROFILE) now uses tax data from two years prior instead of one. That means students and parents will use 2015 tax information to complete the 2017-2018 FAFSA and CSS PROFILE. Both of these changes should make it easier to apply for financial aid!

Applying for Aid for the 2017-18 Academic Year

Because the 2017-18 FAFSA and CSS PROFILE are already available, you and your student can get a jump start on the financial aid application process for next year by submitting them now. But no rush—the priority deadline for current students to apply for financial aid is not until March 15th.

How to Apply:

  • Complete the 2017-18 FAFSA.
  • Complete the 2017-18 CSS PROFILE.
(The CSS PROFILE is not required for music majors or for students in the Colorado Women's College or University College.)

When to Apply:
The priority deadline for current students is March 15th.

What You'll Need:
All of your 2015 tax information. We strongly encourage you to use the IRS data retrieval tool when completing the FAFSA, which will quickly transfer your 2015 tax return data directly into your application.

Some parents have asked if they can wait until January or later and complete the 2017-18 FAFSA with 2016 tax information. And the answer is no. You must use 2015 data.

We will begin sending 2017-18 financial aid award letters to those with completed applications in late May or early June.
