Intellectual Property & Technology Transfer

The Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer (OIPTT) assists faculty, staff, and students with issues related to Intellectual Property protection. This includes managing, protecting, and licensing the University's Intellectual Property (IP).

We're responsible for promoting research partnerships and negotiating agreements between the University and outside entities. These partnerships help enable federally funded research findings to be further developed and commercialized.

We also conduct legal review of research agreements. Agreements include confidentiality/non-disclosure, collaboration, service, data transfer/use, material transfer, and sponsored research. Working alongside the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), we negotiate and review the relevant provisions of these agreements. The Office of General Counsel may also assist the Office in reviewing the provisions of specific contracts.

If you have questions about intellectual property, technology transfer, the agreement review process, or creative partnerships, please reach out to Ashley Thomas.

What is Intellectual Property?

Intellectual Property (IP) refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce. These creations and inventions can be owned and protected in a variety of ways: patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. There are additional procedures to extend protection internationally.

What is Technology Transfer?

In Universities, technology transfer facilitates the movement of research and discovery from the laboratory and classroom into industry products and services via Intellectual Property (IP) protection, licensing and commercialization.
