Now that classes have started, do you need to adjust the loans you planned to borrow for the 2017-18 academic year? Returning a Refund It's important that you follow the process outlined above instead of sending a check directly to your servicer. Here's why: If you sent a portion of your refund directly to your servicer, they would treat it as a payment to your loan instead of reducing your actual loan balance. That means you would have to pay interest on the original amount you borrowed throughout the life of the loan. If DU sends the funds back on your behalf, your principle loan balance will be reduced, which will cost you less in the long run. You have 30 days from the disbursement date to return a portion of your refund to reduce your loan balance. If you want to return money for fall semester, you'll need to do so before September 3rd.
