Julia Hanby

Humanitarian Assistance Student Gabriel Garcia

Julia Hanby is a M.A. candidate in International Development with a certificate in Humanitarian Assistance. Julia has particular interest in protracted refugee crises and the role of education programs in emergency response and long-term development.

Before coming to the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, Julia worked with the Hispanic Services Council in Tampa, FL. She served as a Parent Education and Engagement Community Coordinator for La RED de Padres Activos, an initiative to close the achievement gap by helping Latino parents to engage in the educational success of their children, particularly by learning from other parents in their community. Julia was an AmeriCorps Volunteer at the Latino Family Center through Compass AmeriCorps, a program that provides wrap-around social services support and literacy instruction for refugees and immigrants in Pittsburgh. She also has internship and volunteer experience in refugee resettlement programs.

Julia is originally from Findley Lake, NY. She holds a BA of Ethics, History, and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University. Julia had an additional major in Global Studies and a minor in Hispanic Studies, and she graduated from the Humanities Scholars Program.
