Our MA allows you to explore how communication influences humanity's understanding of cultures, relationships and communities. Whether examining the intersections of culture and communication, exploring how identity is communicated or analyzing how humans use language to persuade, you'll be exposed to diverse perspectives, ideologies and power structures. You'll also have the opportunity to customize your degree by choosing an area of focus and a degree completion method that matches your career goals.

Many students from our communication studies master's program find careers as passionate educators and faculty members, while others may establish careers in government, journalism, marketing, public relations, social justice advocacy or social work. You'll learn inclusive communication techniques as well as critical thinking and problem-solving skills that can support any role.

Concentrations

Culture and Communication

The culture and communication focus explores the intersections of culture, race, class, religion, ethnicity, nationality, gender and sexual orientation. Its vision is to promote an ethic of inclusivity, racial and social justice, reciprocity and mutual transformation in the encounter of difference.

Interpersonal and Family Communication

The area of interpersonal communication explores how people interact and the impact their actions have on relationships between pairs, families, groups, social networks and communities.

Rhetoric and Communication Ethics

Rhetoric and communication ethics is dedicated to the investigation of public communication and is particularly concerned with questions of how ethics and justice can be upheld in public, organizational and personal communication.

    Degree Requirements

    • Students can complete the program in two years and have the choice of the thesis track or the comprehensive examination track.
    • The thesis track requires 45 total credits. Non-coursework requirements include a thesis and thesis oral defense.
    • The comprehensive examination track requires 52 total credits. The comprehensive exam is a non-coursework requirement and may be taken throughout the year with the exception of summer quarter.
