About the Program

Audition and Portfolio Requirements

Applicants should prepare a solo recital program of at least 45 minutes of repertoire. Music should be memorized and selections should include major works from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th-century periods. Sight-reading will be selected at the audition. Applicants must also:

  • Submit a research paper related to music education/pedagogy (preferably related to undergraduate work)
  • Submit a 20-minute video of their teaching
  • Complete an interview with the piano pedagogy faculty

Degree Requirements

The 55-credit master of music in piano pedagogy includes lessons, ensembles, and coursework in pedagogy, music theory, and musicology. In addition, students must complete these non-coursework requirements:

  • One full-length performance recital
  • Final teaching demonstration
  • Final oral comprehensive exam
  • Demonstration of graduate-level proficiency in musicology and music theory proficiency exams
  • Convocation attendance
