ANNOUNCEMENT: Foundations of Trauma-Responsive Care in Higher Education Training

We in higher education are familiar with struggle. We work with students, staff and faculty who struggle to persist in their studies and their work and whose previous experiences may leave them vulnerable to unexpected strife. An individual's experience of trauma impacts every area of human functioning — physical, mental, behavioral, social, spiritual. What makes them vulnerable? What are the triggers? How to know? What to do?

We are very excited to bring this training to DU. In this one-day training, participants will learn the key assumptions and principles of trauma-informed approaches in higher education and consider how to conduct business under the framework of a trauma-responsive approach. What is trauma? What is the experience of trauma? What does trauma look like in college-aged students and adult learners? How does trauma affect learning, behavior and relationships? What are the core values of trauma-informed practice? What are helpful trauma-responsive strategies for higher education settings? And how to cope with secondary exposure to trauma?

Included: Coffee, tea and assorted pastries at 8:00 AM. Lunch (gluten free options provided).

The Ombuds is a confidential and informal resource to help people navigate the University. The Ombuds Office at the University of Denver provides assistance to faculty, staff, students and others having a problem with or within the University of Denver. The Ombuds can help people make sense of challenging situations and connect them with the University's policies, procedures and resources. The Ombuds can also pay attention to how DU's responses and resources are working.

Some examples of the type of concerns received by the Ombuds Office include but are not limited to:

  • Interpersonal conflicts
  • Disagreement over grades
  • Working conditions
  • Sexual harassment
  • Discrimination
  • Clarification of policies or procedures, and
  • Conflict resolution training
