Loss of a Family Member

Dealing with the loss of a loved one is always incredibly difficult; it makes no difference if the loss was expected or sudden. Our thoughts turn away from day-to-day necessities; emotions strike at odd times; thoughts about the future seem to flee.

We, at the University of Denver, want you to know that there are numerous resources on, and off, campus that can support you in your time of grief.  Regardless of your status on campus, you have the resources of the Health and Counseling Center (303-871-2205 or info@hcc.du.edu), as well as the University Chaplain (303-871-4488 or gary.brower@du.edu], to which you can turn. Both can help with immediate needs and, if necessary, help you find appropriate off-campus resources.

Additionally, we want you to know that there are policies in effect at DU that will help support you in terms of time away from studies and/or work responsibilities. The full policies for students and employees (including allowable time away and who to contact) can be found in the side-bar to the right.  Briefly, those provisions are:  students, faculty or staff will be excused from class (or work) for funeral leave in the event of the death of a immediate family or household member for up to three work days for an in-state funeral and five work days for out-of-state.
