Cultivating Wellness: Harnessing the Power of Mindfulness & SEL

Sponsored in partnership by mindSpark Learning, Morgridge College of Education, and the Center for Professional Development at the University of Denver.

This one-week institute is designed to support educators in successfully implementing strategies and practices to help students develop the skills necessary to manage emotions and be mindful of the impact their thoughts and emotions have on their daily lives. Educators who are knowledgeable about mindfulness and social-emotional learning (SEL) practices, and who embrace the benefits of implementing such practices into their classrooms, can profoundly impact the daily lives of their students. Participants of the institute will leave with curricular tools they can apply in their classrooms to help students develop into socially and emotionally aware young people who thrive in academic and social environments.

The institute is designed to support educators in successfully implementing strategies and practices to help students develop the skills necessary to manage emotions and be mindful of the impact their thoughts and emotions have on their daily life.

Educators who are knowledgeable about mindfulness and social-emotional learning (SEL) practices and who embrace the benefits of implementing such practices into their classrooms can profoundly impact the daily lives of their students. Participants of the institute will leave with a deep understanding of ways SEL and mindfulness can impact the daily lives of their students, and curricular tools that they can apply in their classrooms to help students develop into socially and emotionally aware young people who thrive in academic and social environments.

Learning Objectives
  1. Distinguish between fixed and growth mindsets
  2. Practice mindfulness techniques that develop self-empathy and compassion
  3. Analyze mindfulness tools and best practices
  4. Compare strategies to nurture capacity for empathy
  5. Analyze classroom structures that promote social and emotional development
  6. Practice strategies to increase student creativity

This program is approved for 4.0 CEUs (or 40 professional development hours). The University of Denver, Center for Professional Development (CPD) is approved by the Morgridge College of Education and The University of Denver to sponsor professional development and continuing education units for educators. CPD maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
