Working with Latinx-Bilingual Clients: Therapy and Assessment Considerations

This course, developed by Henrietta “Hetty” Pazos, PsyD, provides recommendations for professionals planning to deliver culturally competent care to Latinx community members, a historically exploited group that represents more than half of all U.S. immigrants and is continuously growing. Limited research exists on Latinx communities, despite their large presence in the United States. Pazos will draw on her training and experience to help professionals develop culturally competent awareness, knowledge, and skills in working with Latinx clients. Students will explore how the effects of learning a second language can impact a client’s clinical presentation, performance, and behavior during assessment and therapy.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Identify the stages, processes, and terms related to second language acquisition (SLA).
  • Articulate their beliefs about SLA and how it impacts their decisions about assessment or therapy with English language learners (ELLs).
  • Apply clinical considerations for assessment of and service delivery to ELLs, based on SLA knowledge.

Henrietta “Hetty” Pazos, PsyD,
is a clinical and school psychologist with over 15 years of experience working with the Latinx community in Denver, Colorado. She brings expertise in the areas of Latinx mental health, second-language acquisition and acculturation, school psychology, and bilingual and multicultural assessment. She has publications in the areas of multilingual and multicultural assessment and the use of social media to reduce barriers to mental Students can expect to have access to course content in Canvas, University of Denver’s online learning platform, on July 6, 2020 or within one week of enrollment, whichever is later. Enrolled students will have until December 11, 2020 to complete course material. Enrollment for this course will close on November 27, 2020 to allow for adequate completion time.

This program is approved for 3 hours of continuing education. The University of Denver, Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. GSPP maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
