Stress and Athletes

The purpose of this course is to provide coaches with an understanding of how stress can be utilized for athletic performance and how failing to manage stress can lead to decreased athletic performance and higher injury rates. Moreover, the course will provide detailed examples of where stress comes from within athletics, where it comes from outside of athletics, and a practical application portion that gives coaches strategies on how to deal with athlete stress. Each section of the course will have an assessment to check the participant’s understanding on the material. By the end of the course, students will have an understanding of the impact that stress can have athletic performance and the importance of managing it.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Identify and comprehend sources of stress (physical, psychological, and emotional) within athletics.
  • Recognize sources of stress come from outside of athletics.
  • Apply the principles of progressive overload and periodization in order to manage the stress their athletes experience over the course of a year.
  • Create, analyze, and use data to help them understand their athlete’s stress levels.

Instructor:
Paul Valukas
is a Strength and Conditioning Coach and a graduate of the University of Denver Masters in Sports Coaching program. He has worked with the University of Wisconsin Madison Football program as well as the Men’s and Women’s Hockey Teams. For the past two years, he has been an assistant for the University of Denver Sports Performance staff while overseeing the Denver Tennis Program’s strength and conditioning. He was recently hired by the LA Kings organization in Los Angeles as the Strength & Conditioning coach for the Ontario Reign (the AHL TEAM for the Kings). He is passionate about advancing the profession of Strength and Conditioning and connecting the understanding of stress with the sports performance field.

Online Course Format:
Students can expect to have access to course content in Canvas, University of Denver’s online learning platform, on July 6, 2020 or within one week of enrollment, whichever is later. Enrolled students will have until December 11, 2020 to complete course material. Enrollment for this course will close on November 27, 2020 to allow for adequate completion time.
