Change Management and Leadership

This two-part course, led by Assistant Professor Pat Greer, explores the relationship between employees and change and provides the tools to become a change leader while managing change. Students will discover the basic skills required for effective and ethical change leadership and discuss the various stages of individual and organizational change, essential relationships between leadership and management, and assorted organizational models for leading change. Students will also explore the concept of an adaptive organization and why the notion that change is easy isn’t true. Finally, students will gain a better understanding of the exciting and opportunity-filled world of change and transition, as well as some tactics for staying sane while leading change.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this course, students will be able to:
  • Describe the nature and significance of change in the organization.
  • Analyze the impact of change on the organization, process, finance, or people.
  • Identify the major drivers of change.
  • Identify and manage responses to change among people in the organization.
  • Plan for the process of effective organizational change.
  • Identify the key leadership issues in managing change.
  • Identify and implement practical strategies likely to bring about effective organizational change.
  • Define what change is and what transformation is in an organization.
  • Develop strategies for dealing with both rapid and slow change.
  • Analyze the concepts of chaos.
  • Create a chaordic organization for “best practices” of organizational change and transformation.
