SDLS Japanese

Tuition: $350

Schedule: TBD, Summer Quarter 2019

Location: Anderson Academic Commons, Room 332

Course Description: Self-Directed Language Study (SDLS) is designed to give you the opportunity to study less commonly taught languages not available through traditional classroom instruction at the University of Denver. You manage your goals, schedule and progress, with weekly interaction with a native speaker to practice, ask questions, and develop cultural insights. The goal of SDLS is to assist you in reaching your academic, personal and professional language learning goals and to promote your ability to easily adapt and respond to new linguistic and cultural environments. Participation in the SDLS program requires time and dedication. You must be self-motivated and willing to assume full responsibility for your learning. The SDLS program provides guidance and materials to support you in your language study through the following components:

  • Language Partners – SDLS students regularly meet with a native speaker of the target language in person or via online conversation/meeting tools such as Skype or Google Hangouts. The sessions aim to develop linguistic and cultural competence through active conversation, with limited instruction and correction.
  • Instructional Materials – Students are provided with guidance in setting goals, find learning materials, and managing their learning process. When possible, students are provided with sample curricular outlines and materials lists. Some instructional materials may be available to assist language partners in their meetings with students.
  • Assessment – Students are tested at the end of the quarter to determine language placement and progress. Whenever possible, tests are administered and evaluated according to national and standardized ACTFL testing scales

You will be expected to:

  • commit to a regular schedule of independent study
  • attend two weekly language sessions with your Language Partner, in person and/or online
  • participate in a final oral and/or written proficiency assessment (informal and formal)

Participation in the program helps you:

  • shape and achieve your academic and career goals
  • prepare for travel, study abroad, work abroad and other field experiences
  • build rewarding intercultural relationships.
