Kim Receives National SFBT Research Honor

November 10, 2014

Associate Professor Johnny Kim was awarded the 2014 Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) research recognition award at the Solution-Focused Brief Therapy Association annual conference, held November 5-8 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  The award recognizes significant contributions to SFBT research over many years.

SFBT is an evidence-based intervention that incorporates specific techniques and questioning centered on identifying and magnifying what clients are doing well with regard to solving their own problems. Social workers using SFBT observe not what the clients are doing wrong, but rather what they will be doing when the problem is no longer there. This approach can help create positive response from the clients. Rather than focusing on clients’ deficits and weaknesses that can hinder clients’ progress toward growth, SFBT focuses more on clients’ strengths as a means to help bring about positive changes.
