ENGL 2708- 4 credits

Dates: August 25-29, 2014
Days: Monday - Friday
Time: 10:30 am - 5:30 pm
Instructor: Maik Nwosu

Description: This course will examine the growth of English as a world language, including the consequent adaptation of translation of (aspects of) the language into regional or contextual varieties (such as American English, African American English, Jamaican Patois, South African English, Nigerian Pidgin).  We will study the historical and sociocultural contexts of the transformation from the English language to 'global Englishes' with reference to literary texts from different parts of the (Anglophone) world.  Considering the realtion between literature and film as narrative mediums and cultural indicators, our examination of literary texts with regard to the rise of 'global Englishes' will extend to a review of comparable or relatable transformations in film language or cinematography around the world.
