Described variously as "the Land of Sunshine" and "a nation with [a] reputation as the friendliest in Africa," Ghana emerged as the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to become politically independent in 1957. In its political, social, economic, and cultural accomplishments as well as challenges, Ghana incarnates the movement of (West) African history from the precolonial to the postcolonial era. This course (ENGL 2708: Africa -- The Ghana Experience) will highlight Ghanaian aesthetics in literature, art, music, and cinema. Besides assigned readings of literary and critical texts, the course will incorporate visits to pertinent sites of African history and experience in Accra and Elmina, Ghana.
