New Student Advising

Welcome to the DU Community!

You will select and register for your fall quarter courses before meeting individually with your academic advisor. No need to stress, you have a lot of resources including advising videos, FAQs, course sample plans, live Q&A sessions to support you in planning your fall quarter schedule prior to New Student Registration which begins Monday, July 20th. Don't worry about making a mistake in your course selection, Academic Advisors will review your schedule in August and contact you if there are concerns. During Discoveries Orientation Welcome Week, you will have time to review your course selection with your First-Year Seminar instructor who will serve as your primary advising support in your first year.

We recommend you begin by watching the short advising videos we've created starting with the Preparing for New Student Registration Video, followed by the Common Curriculum Video, and finally choose the advising video(s) for your major area of interest(s).

We are also hosting live Advising Q&A sessions on Wednesday, June 17th and Thursday, July 16th. These interactive sessions will have panelists from the advising videos available to answer questions and support your fall course selection. The sessions will be recorded for future reference.

Prepare for your Zoom Academic Advising Appointment:
• Test your video and sound equipment before your appointment. Adjust the volume or location of your webcam as necessary.
• Bring any questions or concerns: To have the most productive academic advising appointment possible, review your Degree Audit in advance. Have some questions prepared.
• Choose an appropriate environment: Find a space that is quiet, so your Staff Academic Advisor doesn't have to strain to hear you. Wearing earphones is a good idea. Last, but not least, position yourself so the light faces you, not behind you, so your Staff Academic Advisor can see you clearly.
• Be punctual: Log into your Zoom account and set up your video chat at least 5 minutes prior to your appointment time. This will allow you to ensure that your device is working correctly. If you arrive too late and experience any technical difficulties, it will only detract from the time you have to consult with a Staff Academic Advisor.
