Graduate Tax Program

About Us

This program is all tax. Class work is based directly on the Internal Revenue Code and Treasury Regulations. If you want the best tax education available anywhere, you have come to the right place. (If you are interested in another business degree, see the Daniels College of Business website.)

We can call our program the best because there are competitions where students test their tax knowledge against teams from other schools. For example, teams from the Graduate Tax Program have reached the national finals of the ABA Law Student Tax Challenge each year since 2007, taking three of the top four spots two times, including in 2012. In the national tax challenge competition for accountants, sponsored most recently by Deloitte, our team placed first in graduate-level competition six times, second seven times, and third once. No other school even comes close to that record.

And where it really counts—in the job market—the program's reputation carries our students far. The Big Four accounting firms and selected local firms recruit on campus, and nearly every student who participates in recruitment in the fall gets job offers—even before the fall quarter grades are posted. The LL.M. in Taxation provides attorneys with a special advantage in the competitive legal marketplace.

Because the program is a joint LL.M. in Taxation and Master of Taxation program, accountants and lawyers attend the same classes. This is excellent preparation for tax accountants, who are expected to be proficient with legal materials such as the Internal Revenue Code, regulations, cases, and rulings. Tax lawyers benefit from learning the accounting side of tax practice.

And why come to Denver? As long as you are taking a year out of your life to earn a graduate degree, it may as well be in a great location. The city of Denver qualifies on all counts and is regularly listed among the best cities in America in which to live and work.

If you can't come to Denver and are already working in tax, consider Graduate Tax Program Online.  Designed as a part-time program for working tax professionals outside the Denver area, GTP Online allows you to watch lectures at a time and place that works with your busy schedule.  Exams are taken with a proctor in your local community.
