Mondays — 9 am to 6 pm

I am an online student or I'm studying abroad, and I cannot make it to campus for an appointment. Is there a way to have an appointment online?

Yes! We offer online consultations to students who need remote consultation on their writing projects. Our Writing Center uses the collaborative features of Google Drive to chat with students and discuss their drafts in real-time. You can schedule through myWeb or call 303-871-7456 and ask for an online consultation. An appointment confirmation and set of instructions will then be sent to your email address. Please read them carefully.

I have a huge project due at 6:00 p.m. and it is now 4:30 p.m. Can I make an appointment for today?

Unfortunately not. Consultations will not be conducted less than two hours before an assignment is due. If you just have a quick question, however, you're welcome to take advantage of our evening drop-in hours. Check the schedule on the right for this quarter’s drop-in hours.

I have a huge project due at 6:00 p.m. and it is now 12:00 p.m. Can I still make an appointment today? How many appointments can I make today?

Of course! If an appointment is available, writers can meet with a Writing Center consultant once per day per writing project. Consultations will not be conducted less than two hours before an assignment is due, so please be sure to schedule an appointment before 4:00 pm.

I need many meetings for my paper. How many meetings can I have?

Writers can make up to three appointments per week, on three different days. We recommend that you start with only two appointments per week and assess with your consultant whether you need more.

I have a graduate-level paper of 30 pages. How many appointments can I make?

We recommend you start by making two appointments per week and then assess with your consultant whether you need more. We also recommend that you schedule your appointments with no more than two different consultants so that you don't have to explain your project every time you come in. Please remember that you can make no more than three appointments per week.

I just want help with my grammar. Can you fix my grammar?

Yes, sort of. At the Writing Center, we strive to assist you with all aspects of the writing process, including grammar. If you want to focus on grammar during your appointment, we'll work with you to identify recurring patterns in your writing and show you how to fix them or how to vary them. Then we'll help you practice a few examples. You'll then be responsible for applying the changes to the rest of your project. Since you won't be leaving with a grammatically corrected paper, please be sure you leave enough time after your appointment to keep working on it before you have to turn it in.

What time does my appointment start? How long will it go for?

We begin appointments at the start of every hour, so if you make an appointment for 1:00 p.m., we will begin at 1:00 p.m. sharp. If you arrive more than 10 minutes after your appointment should begin, and you haven't called to let us know that you're running late, your appointment may be cancelled if another writer is waiting for a spot.

Can I bring in my computer or do you want me to have a printed copy of my paper/project?

Writing Consultants prefer that you have a printed copy of your paper or project that they may read from; however, please feel free to bring your computer if you work best that way.

Do I have to have an appointment already or can I just come when I need an appointment?

The advantage to making an appointment ahead of time is that you won't have to wait and you have a guaranteed spot. We will happily see writers on a walk-in basis if a consultant is available, but if you come after the beginning of the hour, you may have a shorter appointment.

I really worked well with my last consultant, can I see him/her/them again?

Yes. However, if you make an appointment online, there is no way to choose a particular consultant. Please call the Writing Center directly at 303-871-7456 and request to work with that specific consultant again.

I have received lots of help at the Writing Center, and I would like my partner/sibling/parent/child/friend to receive help too. Can he or she come to my appointment with me or can he or she make an appointment, too?

Unfortunately, our services are only offered to students currently enrolled at the University of Denver and to DU faculty and staff. If your partner/ sibling/ parent/ child/ friend is currently a member of the DU community, they are welcome to make an individual appointment for a consultation at the Writing Center.
