Lamont School of Music


Alumni of the Lamont School of Music work and perform across our nation and around the world.

A few examples of recent accomplishments of our alumni include:

Sunny Kim, Jazz Performance, has joined the faculty at the Dong-ah Institute of Media and Arts as a full time professor. DIMA has one of Korea's top ranking contemporary music departments with acceptance rate for voice majors at 0.7%. The alumni include internationally famed K-pop artists. 

Kornel Thomas, 2014 AD in concducting, has won a one year assistant conductor position in Hungary with the Savaria Symphony Orchestra. He will be conducting around 40 children's concerts throughout the season as well as some excellent major concerts. Kornel's debut with the orchestra will be later in September.

Michael Hewitt, 2015 BM Performance, is reprising his Lamont Opera Theatre role of Jud Frye in OKLAHOMA!, directed by Molly Smith at the Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown, NY.  He also took over the role of Edoardo in the American Premiere of Donizetti's "The Siege of Calais."

2014 BM in Performance, has been cast in the London West End production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical "Evita."

Sarah Cambidge Chastain, 2013 MM in Performance & 2011 BM in Performance has been awarded one of the highest honors and most prestigious appointments in the Opera world. Sarah is a 2017 Adler Fellow at San Francisco Opera.

Jackson Stevens, BA in Performance, has been awarded the EY Next Wave Leadership Award by the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts. Jackson, a community volunteer and musician from the Colorado Symphony's Remix, won for his arts ambassadorship. The award was presented at the 2017 CBCA Luncheon.

Teresa Castillo, 2013 MM in Performance, soprano, recently won 1st place in the Anita Cerquetti International Competition in Montecosaro, Italy. She will be joining Bel Canto at Caramoor for a second summer as a Young Artist covering the role of Adele in "Il Pirata," singing on the opening night gala with soprano Angela Meade and will be singing the soprano solo in Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle. In 2018, she will participate in the Herndon Emerging Artist Program with the Virginia Opera and will be covering the roles of Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor and Tytania in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Matt Peterson, 2017 MM in Performance, will be joining Virginia Opera in the 2017-2018 season as a Young Artist! He will be doing outreach for the opera in Richmond from August to December, and then cover Demetrius in their mainstage production of Britten's Midsummer Night's Dream from January to February.

Katie Burns, 2016 MM in Performance and Russ Callison, 2015 MM in Performance, have formed a guitar/cello duo. Check them out. Here are links to their Facebook page, Katie's website and Russ' website for performance information.

Teresa Castillo, 2013 MM in Performance and Sarah Cambidge Chastain, 2013 MM in Performance, 2011 BM in Performance, have been selected for the 2016 Merola Opera Program, San Francisco Opera's prestigious training program.

Nate Wooley, 1999 MM in Trumpet Performance, is one of just 14 recipients to receive a major grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts.  Nate received the 2016 Music/Sound grant.

Robert Wolff, 1983 BM in Performance, oboe, continued his 25-year association with John Williams by working as the Scoring Editor for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Jonathan Govias, 2006 MM in Orchestral Conducting, was recently appointed the new Director of Orchestras at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte

Jim Stranahan, 1976 BME and 1982 MA in Music, and his Little Big Band have released their new CD – Migration to a Higher Ground on Capri Records.

Ben Golden, 2012 MM in Classical Guitar Performance, is touring and recording as a utility musician with Brantley Gilbert, a national country artist with multiple #1′s both as an artist and a songwriter for other artists.

Andrew Steward, 2012 Bachelor of Arts in Music (flute), has received the Inspiring Hope Award in Educational Achievement from the National Council for Behavioral Health.

Carlo Fierens, 2011 Artist Diploma in Classical Guitar, recently won two prestigious prizes in his native Italy – a first prize at the "Art Music and Talent" International Competition and the first prize at the "Italian National Prize for the Arts."
