Colorado Fuel and Iron managers pushed to create a clean and modern community within their camps. The company provided fencing and a yard for miners and their families to grow gardens. However, miners and their families were on their own as far as time and resources to grow their own gardens. To encourage miners and their families to cultivate the gardens, the company published articles claiming the benefits of beautiful gardens and the use of ivy in improving the look of housing. Managers also sponsored garden contests in each camp. The winner most exemplified the aesthetic standards of the company.
