Berwind

The photographers of Berwind favored the north end of the camp. This area held what many miners called the company's "show houses." These houses (pictured below) were mostly cement 4-room cottages built following the strike of 1913-1914. By centering photographs on these houses, the company was able to promote its camp as clean and organized. The rest of the camp, with miners' private housing and industrial architecture was absent in the photographs.
