Problems Getting Started

If the computer doesn't startup properly, there may be problems with the computer or its configuration.

If you have problems with a computer, please note the number of computer (see charts below, or check the label at the top of each monitor) and let a technician know of the problem. You can call x13595.

Instructor's Guide

Please read the Instructor's Guide for important information about the operation of the lab.

Starting Over

Some problems can be solved by starting over. However, when you restart the computer, all data, documents, etc. will be lost. If you need to save any data, do so to the S:\ drive, not on the hard drive (C:\).

To start over:

  • Remove all diskettes.
  • If the mouse works,
    1. Use the mouse to click on the Start button in the lower left corner of the screen.
    2. Select Shut Down. This will bring up the "Shut Down Windows" dialog screen.
    3. Select Shut down the computer.  Shut down the computer
    4. Click on Yes.
    5. When you see the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" message, click on Restart.
  • If the mouse is not working,
    1. Hold down the Ctrl key and strike the Esc key. This should bring up the Start Menu.
    2. Use the up arrow key to highlight Shut Down, then press the Enter key.
    3. Use the up or down arrow key to select Shut down the computer.
    4. Press the Enter key.
    5. When you see the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" message, press the Enter key to restart the computer.
  • Another way to shut down Windows with the keyboard is to
    1. Hold down the Alt key and strike the F4 key. If there are open applications, this will close them. Once there are no open applications, Alt-F4 will bring up the "Shut Down Windows" dialog screen.
    2. Use the up or down arrow key to select Shut down the computer.
    3. Press the Enter key.
    4. When you see the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" message, press the Enter key to restart the computer.
  • If you can't shut down through the Start menu, or with Alt-F4,
    1. Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys and, while holding down those two keys, strike the Del key once.
    2.  Task Manager Screen
    3. Use the Tab key to select the Shut Down button, then press the Enter key.
  • Avoid turning the computer off and on. However, if the above procedures do not work, continue with the steps listed below.

    1. Power off the computer by pressing the On/Off button located in the lower right on the front of the computer.
    2. Wait for 10 seconds, then power on the computer by pressing the On/Off button.

Printing

Each lab has a laser printer. Make certain the printer is powered on before printing.

No Audio

If you are trying to play sound from the computer through the audio system, press the button on the tuner/receiver labeled MD/TAPE.
