Area K located in the south end of Berwind is representative of the early period of the camp ca. 1890-1905. We identified this time frame from analysis of historic maps and artifacts. Historical archaeologists can use the dates artifacts were manufactured to determine a time when people most likely used them. Based on the manufacturing dates of nails and bottle glass, the area dates to the early settlement of Berwind. This area also held much of the miners' self-built housing. After the strike, the area was cleared of many of the former houses and structures. Excavations in this area K centered on the midden and a privy or outhouse. The archaeological material found provided information on the goods bought and used by the early households of the Berwind camp.
